This Ask SEO question comes from Ian from San Juan, who asks:
“What do you say should be the top SEO focus that came into 2022 for brands that strive to develop a wholesale product business to generate more leads and sales?”
Every year, SEO pros look for a magic bullet.
Even after 21 years, I’m still hoping to find a technique that automatically ranks sites for any query I want.
Most SEO experts I know still look.
And we talk about the latest trends uncovered from our hours of reverse engineering efforts.
And while there are definitely “hot” techniques, I want readers of this column to understand that the basics of SEO don’t change in the long run.
Instead of chasing the algorithm glitches that come with the quick lift of your latest Google rep, I recommend awful back to basics.

Since the emergence of link-based algorithms such as Google’s PageRank, the basics of search engine optimization remain the same.
I can’t guarantee much in life – Google tells me it doesn’t offer a guarantee.
But I can guarantee that if you do the following five things correctly for each request that you want to rank, you will rank for that request.
These are what I consider the five pillars of search engine optimization:
Code
Your web page code is the foundation of all your marketing strategies.
This site code should be built so that search engines can easily find the good content that you create.
Your web page code can’t get you ranked – but if not done correctly it can protect you from ranking.
Content
The content on your web pages should be all-inclusive for your prospects.
You need to have content that works for guests who are ready to buy, as well as those who need more information before making a purchase or filling out a lead form.
Your content should also use keywords and phrases that you want to rank for.
According to Google, your content should exude project skills, authority, and project trust. It is commonly referred to by its culinary acronym, EAT.
Connections
Also known as link building, this is what separates a good SEO expert from a great SEO expert.
Most folks doing SEO can handle the technical side of things. Many can also create a coherent and effective content strategy.
Requires a force public relations mindset and SEO knowledge.
Buy risky links and I don’t recommend that.
Work to create a link strategy that builds on its own. For storage, I will first look at selling equipment and my partners for links.
Then I will look to create link-worthy content that influencers in my field want.
Communications
Social media really doesn’t help your SEO directly, but social media is how we distribute and promote the great content that we create.
Social media is frequently how we connect with influencers from whom we need links.
Your communication strategy is important for SEO, although links from social media will not give you a boost on Google.
Capture
Google Analytics itself can give you content ideas, UX insights, reader insights, and more.
Hire someone to spend time on your data if you don’t know what you’re looking at.
I’ve been doing SEO for 21 years, and I’d still like to have another set of eyes from my team reviewing the data to make sure I’m not missing anything.
Implement these five things better than the others, and you will exalt him every time.
But be aware – you need to get in every request that you want to rank.
Most of us will never win that war all the time.
And that’s one of the reasons SEO happens and not a set-it-and-forget-it tactic.
Know Your Audience
Know your readers it’s not a new trend for 2022, but I see a lot of SEO campaigns are missing.
Just because the jobs that we perform as SEO professionals are sometimes technical, that doesn’t mean our audience is technical.
In fact, I see far too many SEO experts think the audience they are targeting is like them.
In most cases, the audience is very different from the people optimizing the site.
SEO professionals need to practice empathy in our keyword research, UX changes, content creation, and basically, everything we do.
Know your audience likes and dislikes.
Know their political procliities if possible.
Know your average income, age, and gender.
Understand the best way to approach your readers.
This is most likely different for B2B warehouse clients than for companies selling tea or refinancing mortgages.
Use the data provided by search engines, as well as your own web page data, to better understand your readers.
In Conclusion
Stop chasing the latest silver bullets.
Double down on SEO basics that haven’t changed in over 15 years.
Remember that every query is different, and you have to get in every search.
Implement these things and you will achieve your ROI goals.
